John Barber's refers to the music he plays as house music, but its not ordinary house music. It's bass driven deep/tech house with a percussive and jackin' edge. His sets build through different grooves and moods smoothly, cutting through killer basslines along the way.

John's obsession with dance music began back in 1994, after listening to his brothers hardcore and jungle tapes for the first time. His brother, Steve, a keen DJ at the time himself, was playing on the circuit in Southampton and Bristol and was definitely a massive influence on John. Frequently buying tape packs and the occasional piece of vinyl to play on his brother's turntables, John dreamt of the day he would own a set of his own. That day came when John reached the age of 15, after saving hard for a year or so he finally had a set of his own to practice on religiously.

John started out playing friends parties which then took the steady progression to promoting and putting on one off parties for students in Southampton and Bournemouth, at venues such as the Guildhall and the Opera House. As well as promoting events and DJing, John got himself a part time job in a record shop in Southampton. Upon leaving college he took on the roll full time. This was the base for John to do his research, learning about music and how the industry worked. He gave the DJ's that visited the shop his CD's for feedback good or bad. Phil Thompson, Bedrock resident and producer, was one of the people John used to give his mixes to. Phil would come back and tell him outright what he thought, and advice like this helped John realize what he wanted to be as a DJ, and what qualities you needed to be one, or a good one anyway.

Inspirational nights out clubbing and his increasing addiction to music pressured John to do all he could to get more opportunities to play his music out to an educated audience. He now regularly DJs at Turnmills in London and for ClubClass in Maidstone where he performed at the nights 8 th Birthday (broadcast on Radio1) and their New Years Day Special alongside Nic Fanciulli and James Zabiela. In addition to these gigs Barbers talent can also be witnessed at High Tide in Southampton, Pin Up in Sheffield, Maison in Bournemouth and also at his Electric Playground night (www.electricplayground.co.uk) which launched in April 2006.

Held at the town's mecca for underground house beats, the town's awesome Dusk Till Dawn nightclub (complete with its Funktion One Soundsystem), Electric Playground made a sensational sell-out debut with over 500 clubbers going mental to the sounds of Barber and the awesome Kenny Hawkes. Since then John has welcomed The Electric Press, Parisian legend Phil Weeks, Luke Soloman, Justin Harris and Nathan Coles to the monthly night and looks ahead to bringing many of the freshest and most forward thinking DJs on the house music circuit to one of the UK's finest dance music venues.

In addition to his Electric Playground residency John's production work which is now getting the recognition it richely deserves. Carl Cox has licensed John's excellent ‘Acid Rebirth' to his Space 2006 compilation, whilst ‘High Feeling' was released in May on Exun Recordings. Expect similar interest in John's latest efforts, the brilliantly titled ‘Minimize This' and ‘Law and Order', two more superb slices of mind bending, hip wiggling acid house, with collaborations with Rich Sutcliffe as BASS Experiment also planned for release this year.
